In Christ’s ancient Roman church there were several crucial groups of “minor clerics” on hand to serve the Church by assisting bishops, priests, and deacons like exorcists and sub deacons. After Pope Paul VI reclassified these “minor orders” as lay ministries with a special “priestly” duty of service (CCC 903, 1672).
There the stage was set for catechists to meet the specific needs of the modern Church in a greater role as ministers and servants of God’s word. Today they are called to evangelize in and out of the classroom and lead formation programs to lead those who are newer to the faith into the beautiful mysteries of Christ. Behind catechist lies the Greek word for instructor, but behind that is the even older Greek meaning of “echo”. In the early Christian church, a catechist was a general description for a teacher from any group or order who echoed the teaching of Christ by oral proclamation or discussion faithful the church’s true apostolic teaching.
